The Urbanism Hours are virtual lunch time events that explore a given theme within the built environment, with two speakers and a Q&A discussion.
October's Urbanism Hour will look at urban lighting, from festivals to floodlights, with speakers Jessica Férey, LUCI, and Laura Phillips, Arup. This session will be chaired by AoU Board Director Heather Claridge, Architecture & Design Scotland.
Speakers:
Jessica Férey
Jessica is a passionate arts and light-lover with particular commitments to innovative connections between people and culture and public space. As Deputy Director of LUCI (the international network of cities on urban lighting), she is in charge of network stewardship and development as well as the network’s events strategy. She oversees LUCI’s activities under the Art & Culture pillar, including the Light Festival Working Group and all things relating to creative lighting. Previously, she was Deputy Director of the Global Cultural Districts Network and prior to that worked at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in the United States. She received a Master’s in Arts Management at American University in Washington DC, where her research focused on gender equity in arts leadership.
Laura Phillips
Laura is an Associate Director at Arup and leads the Lighting group in the North, she is a recognised expert in delivering design led projects in the UK and internationally. She has over 30 years experience as a lighting designer working on a wide range of project types. Laura has a specific interest in public realm lighting and how lighting can improve our wellbeing and safety at night. Her notable public realm project work includes the celebrated Piece Hall in Halifax, Bristol Square and Haymarket in Edinburgh, Wembley and Tottenham Stadium public realm spaces and Union Terrace Gardens in Aberdeen and Gilmorhill Campus for Glasgow University, for which Arup received a Gold Scottish Design Award for Lighting for two consecutive years. Laura lectures on lighting design at various universities and is an active professional member of the Society of Light and Lighting (CIBSE SLL).
