Mariëlle Beenackers is a public health researcher and university lecturer at the Department of Public Health at Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam. Her work centers on understanding how the urban environment shapes health outcomes and contributes to health inequalities across different population groups. She serves as the program leader of CEPHIR (Centre for Effective Public Health in the larger Rotterdam area), an academic collaborative center that partners with municipalities and health services in the Rotterdam-Rijnmond, Zeeland, and Zuid-Holland Zuid regions. Through research, education, and capacity building, CEPHIR aims to promote a healthier population and reduce health disparities. Mariëlle is driven by a passion for science that matters—research that not only advances academic knowledge but also leads to tangible improvements in public health. She believes in the power to bridge the gap between science and society.

Mariëlle will speak as part of the Utrecht: The story so far session on Wednesday 11 June
