Jan Vapaavuori served as the Mayor of Helsinki (2017-2021), where he focused on sustainability, digitalisation, and improving city services. He led major urban projects and reforms, including creating start-up hubs and revitalising key city areas. Previously, he was Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (2015-2017), overseeing operations in the Nordics and Baltics. As Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs (2012-2015) and Minister of Housing (2007-2011), he championed policies like the “Housing First” program, reducing long-term homelessness.
Vapaavuori now runs an advisory business focused on urban development, real estate, and energy. He is actively involved in global platforms such as the Bloomberg New Economy Cities Council and has published several books. Vapaavuori holds a Master of Laws degree and an Honorary Doctorate in Economics, and is a supporter of the arts through his family foundation.
