The materials we use to build our future buildings will significantly impact how we address climate change. For decades, the Western world’s approach to construction has focused on extractive and carbon-intensive material usage. But has the sustainable tide begun to turn? What other options are available, particularly for building at scale? What is the ideal building material of the future? What lessons do other places and cultural approaches hold, especially in using timber and other renewable material sources?

Utilising the experience of design professionals specialising in timber and stone construction, with a specific look at the Black & White Building, this Workshop will explore what sustainable construction entails. It will investigate how reuse options balance out with reducing the carbon footprint of what we build and how we build it.

Presenters: Andrew Waugh, Director, Waugh Thistleton Architects and Pierre Bidaud, Creative Director, The Stonemasonry Company
