Join the Academy of Urbanism’s book club, in an online first to open up to other members across the UK (and beyond!) Here we explore critical ideas shaping our cities. This is a space for built environment enthusiasts of all colours, and otherwise curious minds to engage in thought-provoking discussions on urban life, design, and justice. Our Third Urbanism Book club looks at The Rise of the Creative Class – Richard Florida.
The Rise of the Creative Class by Richard Florida is a provocative and influential work that reimagines the drivers of urban and economic transformation in the 21st century. Florida’s thesis centres on the emergence of a new social class—artists, designers, tech workers, educators, and other knowledge-based professionals—whose preferences and lifestyles are reshaping cities from the inside out. We want to consider the effect this has had on cities, for better or for worse, since the books publication in 2002.
So, whether you're a fan of Florida's approach and legacy, or a sceptic of the neoliberal city-making turn, come along to the event for a spirited and critical conversation. We’ll unpack the legacy of Florida’s ideas, explore their relevance to planning practice today, and ask: who really benefits when cities chase the creative class?
Further suggestions are welcome for the session after a poll will be shared for all attendees of this event. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting to explore urban studies, all are welcome! The event will be held online - joining instructions can be found in your booking confirmation with a reminder sent out nearer the time.
This session is organised by members of the AoU network based in Scotland.
