Join the AoU’s new quarterly book club in Glasgow, where we explore critical ideas shaping our cities. This is a space for built environment enthusiasts of all colours, and otherwise curious minds to engage in thought-provoking discussions on urban life, design, and justice. Our second Urbanism Book club looks at May East’s book What If Women Designed the City? 33 Leverage Points to Make Your City Work Better for Women and Girls

After our fascinating first session regarding everyone's favourite Australian Marxist geographer, we turn now to What if Women Designed the City?, which offers a fresh perspective on urban development by giving voice to local women from many different countries and backgrounds, revealing multiple untapped potentials rooted in the uniqueness of their neighbourhoods.

The book builds on the core assumption that women can contribute significantly more to urban planning decisions and implementation, and in doing so enrich and add value to urban environments and specifically to their own neighbourhoods. East’s book offers 33 leverage points on how urban planners, policy-makers, practitioners, and communities could intervene in urban planning systems so that cities of the present and future can be greener, wilder, more inclusive, liveable, and poetic. It’s impact is already feeding its way into urban policy making across Europe. So to find out more come along to the event for a lively and fruitful discussion.

Further suggestions are welcome for the session after a poll will be shared for all attendees of this event.

Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting to explore urban studies, all are welcome! The event will be held at Collective Architecture, with refreshments provided.

Interested to hear from May herself?

On Thursday 28 August we have an evening event, Authors of Urbanism: May East in Conversation where she will share more about her research more broadly, specialising in nature-positive and gender-sensitive cities. Click here to register.
