The event will be a guided walking-tour of the new town of Adamstown on the Western edge of Dublin City. Adamstown, a site of 225ha of private land, was designated as a Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) by the Government in 2001 for the creation of a new town of 10,000 homes, approximately 35,000 persons. The design philosophy promoted walkable, mixed-use urban neighbourhoods, diverse housing, timely delivery of facilities and infrastructure - a sustainable alternative to urban sprawl.

A detailed masterplan was approved to be delivered in 13 phases linking the timely delivery of open spaces, schools, retail, community and leisure facilities to targeted numbers of house occupations. Development was impacted significantly by economic downturn in 2008 but commitment by South Dublin Co. Co. to the delivery of the masterplan reinvigorated the programme and 5,200 homes are now completed with 1,320 under construction.

The walk will visit:

  • the growing district-centre and new apartment schemes beside the train station
  • a new boulevard and associated park
  • Airlie Park cricket-ground and café
  • Tandy’s Lane Park
  • cluster of new schools and new community-centre building
  • series of public spaces and parks serving new diverse housing districts
