The Academy of Urbanism's annual Awards comprise four major stages: nomination, shortlisting, assessment, and voting. Five if you include celebration.

Academicians, Young Urbanists, and other AoU Members are invited and encouraged to join in the Assessment Visits, which will take place throughout July, August, and September, once our 15 finalists are announced.

These visits are hosted by a Council, Developer, or other stakeholder group (depending on context and scale of a place) and offer an exclusive 'backstage' look at each place. They typically involve a tour, chats with local residents and business owners, and an opportunity to sit down with the hosts.

Dates and more details will be added to this page when visits begin to take shape. These are self-funded and there is no additional fee.

"Every visit is a surprise, even if you think that you know the place. There is nothing better than being introduced to some of the greatest places by the people who know them best. Lifting the bonnet to see how they work."

- Tim Challans and Steve Bee, Great Town Lead Assessors

"All the assessment visits offer a unique back stage pass to the finalists, offering a wonderful opportunity to experience a wide range of exemplary places and meet the people that make them.
"The assessment process is always enriching and has given me some of the most rewarding professional development I’ve ever undertaken."

Francis Newton, Great Place Lead Assessor
